This image shows a painting which is framed in a pigmented pastel lavender panel that includes fragments of earth and rocks from the sites where the paintings were made. The painting is a horizontal composition that reveals an interior view of 2 wooden shelves in O’Keeffe’s cabinets full of bowls, cups and plates painted in an array of colors and gestural strokes. The edge of the first shelf, which is painted in a bright but subdued white-yellow, dissects the picture plane bringing the viewer’s attention to the objects on the shelves. The top shelf has stacked white stoneware plates and dishes, a stack of 4 brown stoneware cereal bowls, 2 mugs and a plate, and a stack of two green Mexican ceramic serving bowls with small terra cotta colored chips on the rim along with three white serving bowls stacked on top. In the foreground is a small ceramic bowl with a bright yellow band outlined in red with decorative green leaves and red flowers. The bottom shelves have 3 stacked blue and white patterned Chinese rice bowls and 3 Chinese teacups and 2 rice bowls stored rimmed side down.
This is an image that shows the side view of O'Keeffe's Dishes showing a screen printed ruler painted along the edge of the painting with a pink background and black numbers.

The dishes in this painting are from O’Keeffe’s summer home at Ghost Ranch and were in daily use when she stayed there. The breakfast nook next to this kitchen cabinet was one of O’Keeffe’s favorite sitting areas, where she took many meals at the Ranch.

Halvorson is known for her paintings of ordinary, everyday objects. Domestic still life subjects such as this set of dishes have a candid character, as if captured in an instant.
